๐ How To Use
1
Select your unit system. Choose Metric (cm and kg) or Imperial (feet/inches and pounds). All results will be displayed in your selected unit.
2
Enter your height and select your gender. Height is the most critical input โ both male and female formulas use different base values for the same height.
3
Enter your current weight (optional). If you add your current weight, the calculator will tell you whether you are within, above, or below your ideal weight range and by how much.
4
Click Calculate. See your ideal weight range from four different medical formulas side by side, so you can see the full picture rather than a single arbitrary number.
โ๏ธ The Formulas Explained
BMI Method
Calculates the weight range that corresponds to a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 for your height. This is the most widely used and WHO-endorsed method for assessing healthy weight.
Devine Formula (1974)
Originally created for medication dosing. Male: 50 + 2.3 ร (height in inches โ 60). Female: 45.5 + 2.3 ร (height in inches โ 60). Still widely used clinically.
Robinson Formula (1983)
A modification of Devine. Male: 52 + 1.9 ร (inches over 5ft). Female: 49 + 1.7 ร (inches over 5ft). Considered more accurate for shorter individuals.
Miller Formula (1983)
Male: 56.2 + 1.41 ร (inches over 5ft). Female: 53.1 + 1.36 ร (inches over 5ft). Produces slightly higher estimates and may better reflect actual healthy body composition.
โ Frequently Asked Questions
No. Ideal weight is a range, not a single number. Different medical formulas produce different estimates, and all of them have limitations. Factors like muscle mass, bone density, age, and body fat distribution are not captured by height-based formulas. The results from this calculator should be used as a general guideline, not a precise target.
Each formula was developed for a different medical purpose and population. The Devine formula was designed for medication dosing, not fitness. The BMI method is based on population-level statistics. No single formula is universally “correct” โ together they give you a useful range of reference points. Most health professionals use BMI as the primary reference.
Body frame size (small, medium, large) refers to your skeletal structure โ specifically your bone size and width. People with larger frames naturally carry more weight at the same height. Frame size is typically estimated by measuring wrist circumference relative to height. The frame option in this calculator adjusts the formula results by approximately ยฑ10% accordingly.
Height-weight formulas are designed for average body compositions and do not account for unusually high muscle mass. A bodybuilder or professional athlete may weigh significantly more than the “ideal” range shown here while being in excellent health. For athletes, body fat percentage measured by DEXA scan or hydrostatic weighing is a more meaningful metric than weight alone.
No. All the formulas used in this calculator are designed for adults. For children and teenagers, ideal weight is assessed using age- and sex-specific growth percentile charts. Consult your child’s pediatrician for healthy weight guidance for anyone under 18 years of age.
